Study on fabrication and property of nitride fuel for MA transmutation

Nitride fuel with ZrN matrix have been studied for transmutation of minor actinide (MA). These are supposed to be designed as ZrN solid solution or TiN compounds with MA nitride from 20mol% to 40mol%. From the above, composition and temperature dependence of thermal conductivity for safety evaluation of the fuel have been studied with a little of MA. In the present study, we are aimed to clarify composition and temperature dependence of thermal conductivity of Dy$$_{x}$$Zr$$_{1-x}$$N solid solution as surrogate nitride fuel with MA in order to understand the dependence of the MA nitride fuel physically. In addition to, we introduce studies about pyrochemical compatibility between the simulated fuel and candidate material for cladding, and entrusted to Japan Atomic Energy Agency by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT).

Experimental studies on Cs chemisorption on reactor structural materials and their re-vaporization behavior

In order to clarify the re-vaporization behavior of caesium (Cs) chemisorbed compounds which formed onto reactor structural materials during Severe Accident (SA), Cs chemisorbed samples were reheated at 1000$$^{circ}$$C and then microstructural analysis of the chemisorbed samples was conducted. In the case of stainless steel containing Mo, Cs-Mo-O compounds were formed on surface, together with major Cs-Fe-Si-O compounds, and re-vaporized easier than Cs-Fe-Si-O compounds at 1000 $$^{circ}$$C.

Thermal and mechanical properties of (U,Pu)O$$_{2}$$

Young's modulus of MOX pellets was evaluated by measuring the sound velocities of longitudinal and transverse waves in the pellets as functions of porosity, oxygen-to-metal ratio (O/M) and plutonium content. The results showed that porosity was the most important factor that 20% of the porosity decreased Young's modulus by neatly 100 GPa while O/M and plutonium content could change the Young's modulus by ~20 GPa. From the measured sound velocities, temperature dependence on Young's modulus and specific heat capacity were calculated on the Debye model by leveraging the thermal expansion data. The temperature dependence that Young's modulus decreases with increasing temperature is in good agreement with literature data. The specific heat capacity also agrees with that of calculated value by Kopp's method, taken the Schottky term and the excited term into account.
